Caring For Your Candles

The Home + Living Collection

The Home + Living Collection

As the nights grow longer and the daylight starts depleting our bodies naturally want to hunker down and get cozy within our homes. One of our favorite ways to embrace the season is to create an evening ritual and ours starts with lighting a candle.

Candlelight gives us light within the darkness of life, representing a bright future and we'll take that positive thinking in bundles come winter time! But do you know how to care for your candle? There's more to simply lighting the flame and blowing it out before you go to bed at night.

Keep on reading for our top 3 tips on how to care for your candles this winter…

The Wick Trimmer

The Candle Wick Trimmer

Let's start with number one, this was a revelation for us – Trim your wick!

The wick of your candle should be trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times. Keeping the wick trimmed controls the height of the flame, which you'll want to keep low for safety.

Plus have you seen that black soot that your candle produces? Well that's your tell tale sign your wick is too long. To trim your wick use a pair of wick trimmers prior to lighting the candle. If you forgot to trim, simply extinguish the candle and let it cool down to room temperature prior to cutting. As a rule of thumb your wick will need trimming every 4 hours of burn time.

The Candle Snuffer and Wick Trimmer

Avoid the smoke after blowing it out - Extinguish it.

Now we're not talking about getting a mini fire extinguisher for your home (although that is always a handy safety item to have) We’re talking about using a candle snuffer to simply place on top and extinguish the flame. No smoke, no nasty candle blown scent and sleep peacefully knowing it’s been extinguished properly, without a firefighter in site.

Keep your candles out of direct sunlight and covered.

Just like fresh flowers, sunlight drains the life out of a candle. Not only will it melt the top layer of the wax, any scents within the candle, especially essential oils and natural perfumes will become tainted and spoil under the sunlight. And nine times out of ten we buy a candle because of the scent, so keep those aromas at their best and remember to place out of direct sunlight, with a candle lid on top to keep the dust away.
